What is Amazon EFS and its features

Introduction

In this blog, we would discuss What is Amazon EFS and its features. For usage with AWS Cloud services and on-premises resources, Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) offers a straightforward, serverless, set-and-forget elastic file system. It is designed to grow and shrink automatically as you add and remove files, removing the need to provide and manage capacity to meet expansion.

It can scale on demand to petabytes without interfering with applications. You can easily and rapidly establish and configure file systems with Amazon EFS thanks to its straightforward web services interface. The service takes care of managing the entire file storage infrastructure, saving you the hassle of setting up, patching, and maintaining intricate file system configurations.

What is Amazon EFS

The programs and tools you now use are compatible with Amazon EFS because it supports the Network File System version 4 (NFSv4.1 and NFSv4.0) protocol. A common data source for workloads and applications operating on many compute instances or servers is made available via the simultaneous access of an Amazon EFS file system by several compute instances, including Amazon EC2, Amazon ECS, and AWS Lambda.

With Amazon EFS, there is no setup fee or minimum charge; you only pay for the storage that your file system uses. For various use scenarios, Amazon EFS provides a variety of storage classes.

Amazon EFS and its features

Files can be viewed both on-premises and through AWS services. Up to a thousand EC2 instances in the cloud, as well as users connected over a VPN or AWS Direct Connect, can access them concurrently, making EFS suited for a hybrid solution. For simpler collaboration and worldwide remote work, files can be accessed across various AWS Availability Zones (AZs) and locations.

EFS is built with minimal latency in memory, and its IOPS and throughput scale with usage and the number of associated instances, so performance grows as storage capacity does as well. 500k IOPS are available at its maximum performance, with a throughput of 10 GB/s. In order to reduce the risk of running out of space or paying for storage that isn’t being used, EFS automatically scales when data is moved in or out.

EFS makes use of your current security architecture and offers numerous layers of security. It allows you to set file permissions using POSIX and may be used with Access Management (IAM) roles, Amazon Identity, and VPC security groups. EFS provides the capacity to comply with additional regulatory standards as necessary and has built-in compliance with common ones like PCI DSS, HIPAA, and SOC. Storage Classes

You can select from a variety of storage classes using Amazon EFS, each of which is intended for a particular use case:

EFS Standard is a local storage class for data that is accessed often. By storing file system data redundantly across many Availability Zones in an AWS Region, it provides the highest levels of availability and durability.

A regional storage class for infrequently accessed data, EFS Standard-Infrequent Access (Standard-IA). By storing file system data redundantly across many Availability Zones in an AWS Region, it provides the highest levels of availability and durability.

For frequently requested files redundantly stored in a single Availability Zone in an AWS Region, use EFS One Zone.

EFS One Zone-IA (One Zone-IA) is a less expensive storage class for files that are redundantly kept within a single Availability Zone in an AWS Region and are not regularly accessed.

The regional storage classes known as EFS Standard are used to duplicate file system data and metadata across a number of geographically dispersed Availability Zones inside an AWS Region.

They provide continuous availability to data even when one or more Availability Zones in a Region are offline, offering the highest levels of availability and durability.
