A quadratic equations is a second-degree equation of the form ax² + bx + c = 0. Here a, b, are the coefficients, c is the constant term and x is the variable. So the variable x is of the second degree, there are two roots for this quadratic equation. The roots of the quadratic equation can be found by either solving by factorizing or by using a formula.

The quadratic formula to solve a quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0

Example

    • 6x² + 11x – 35 = 0
    • 2x² – 4x – 2 = 0

Completing the square can be used to derive a general formula for solving quadratic equations, called the quadratic formula.

Taking the square root of both sides, and isolating x, gives:
